The world's top custom car builders are displaying their best work to a record crowd at the SEMA Auto show this week at the Las Vegas convention Centre. The number of registered attendees this year has topped 150,000. The caliber of custom cars is off the chart, with some builders investing half a million to a million dollars in some of their vehicles.

Over 300 custom vehicles were listed to compete for prizes in categories including Hot Rod, Best Sport Compact, Truck and off road vehicles, and Young Guns which is a category for new up and coming talent. They are down to the top 12 now with the winners to be announced soon.

This is an industry only event, with hundreds of car parts and accessories companies exhibiting their newest products. Even Mattel is here with their full collection of Life size HotWheels cars like the Darth Vader car and the Twin Mill.

SEMA is the Specialty Equipment Market Association. It represents the automotive aftermarket industry, and the custom car community. SEMA gets involved politically too, and this week SEMA took a stand with the National Transportation Safety Administration, saying it is prepared to challenge  the agency and go to court unless immediate action is taken to implement a new low volume replica car law. Essentially the law ensures custom cars built by small companies that build only a few hundred cars a year can have them licensed for the road. The law reduces or eliminates many of the safety rules and testing regulations in place for high volume mainstream car companies.
