For Toyota the future is now.
The pubic has been seeing that at auto shows in Detroit, Toronto, and most recently this past weekend during the Ottawa Gatineau International Auto Show, where Toyota put its best foot and best vehicles forward to a capacity crowd at the Shaw Centre over four days.
2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid
For Toyota high hopes are pinned on the new 2018 Camry. Toyota states with confidence that with the new Camry they are "raising the ante". It was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show, and the lines turned heads, because they are more aggressive giving the car an overall style that is more exciting.
Camry has been the best selling car in its segment in Canada for the past two years..
“The 2018 Toyota Camry is all-new, with jaw-dropping design, advanced safety systems, and impressive technology - plus stirring performance that makes this mid-size sedan incredibly fun to drive,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “It’s the best mid-size sedan we’ve yet produced - one that will deliver everything Canadians have come to expect from Camry, and a whole lot more.”
“In order to create something that stirs people’s soul, we’ve laid out the concept of a new sedan that provides fun and excitement behind the wheel,” said Masato Katsumata, the Chief Engineer of the new Camry. “In developing the next-generation Toyota Camry, we were able to start with a clean slate, which allowed us to create a true driver’s car.”
The front of the Camry features a two piece grille with distinct lines that give the face of the car its character. Toyota designers say its an intergral part of giving the car its "keen look" design philosophy. Overall the vehicle has a more aggressive stance, and is fact the sportiest of any Camry to date.
The 2018 Camry has a sleeker profile than the outgoing model. The wheel base has been extended two inches. The cars design seats occupants lower, and reduces the overall vehicle height by approximately one full inch compared to the 2017 model. The result is a car that cuts through the wind more efficiently and handles better because of a lower centre of gravity.
Camry will be available in five grades: L, LE, XLE, SE and XSE.
The cabin has been totally redesigned. The objectives were improved ergonmics, making buttons easier to reach, improving visibility, improved comfort, enhanced seating support, and more refined fit and finish inside.
2018 Toyota Camry's Red Interior
The new Camry features Toyota’s latest Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology. The idea is maximum interaction with minimal driver distraction. It relays information through three interlinked displays: available interlinked displays: a 10-inch colour Head-Up Display (HUD); a seven-inch multi-information display within the instrument cluster, and an eight-inch audio/navigation display and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) control panel that’s seamlessly integrated into the center console in a modern, flush-surface design. Convenient and highly intuitive operation is assured through customizable features and smart phone-like touch screen icons that create a seamless connection and user workflow between the HMI system and other digital media.

"The new 2018 Camry will feature a standard 7” Display Audio with 6 speakers. A JBL premium audio system with 8” Display Audio and 9 speakers is also available featuring new advancements in sound quality. Sound enhancements include Sound Staging, which positions speakers directly in front of the listener to help emulate a live concert venue; Low Frequency Sounds, made possible by an added 10.1-inch subwoofer; Clari-Fi, a technology that “un-compresses” music to help restore an audio track’s dynamic range; and nine speakers that are specifically tuned to the Camry’s cabin dimensions and materials".
Safety features will include, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA); and Automatic High Beams (AHB). Select models will also come with standard Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).
All 2018 Camry’s will come equipped with 10 standard airbags and Toyota’s Star Safety System™, which includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology®. All Camry’s also come equipped with a standard backup camera.
The 2018 Toyota Camry fully incorporates: Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). Toyota executives describe TNGA as....a structural reform movement for the entire company that will result in cars that are more dynamic, athletic, and fun to drive.
Camry continues its role as a world car in 2018. It is sold in more than 100 countries.
Three new powertrains will be available on the new 2018 Camry: They include a new 3.5-liter V6 with D-4S Fuel Injection and an all-new 2.5-litre inline-4 gasoline engine, which comes paired to a new 8-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission (8AT), and a next-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS II).
This new generation 2.5 litre engine focuses on higher torque, higher power and lower fuel consumption according to Toyota. This is accomplished by with rapid combustion using higher "tumble air flow".
In its media release for the 2018 Camry Toyota states, "With its long-stroke and high compression ratio, multi-hole direct fuel injectors, variable cooling system and the latest version of Toyota’s Variable Valve-Timing-intelligent Electric (VVT-iE), this high-output powerplant takes the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine to a new level with world-leading thermal efficiency of 40 percent". The end result is expected to be an engine and vehicle that delivers best in class fuel economy and performance.
Will it truly deliver? We can only tell you we've heard from Toyota and what we've seen at the auto shows. The proof will come in the test drives and owner reviews.
Until then there are still 2017's for sale. They're still a segment leader and a great car by any measure. Plus with 2018's due to hit showrooms this summer you might just get an end of model year deal on a remaining 2017.
