Mercedes Benz is getting ready to unveil a high performance electric car at the Paris Auto Show in September.

The all wheel drive model could have a range of 300 miles or more on a single charge, and would match or exceed the performance specifications of the Tesla Model S. In fact the car is said to be so good Tesla may have something to worry about.

However, the Mercedes Benz could cost as much as $200,000. It could hit the market in 2018.

Mercedes Benz executives believe they have an advantage over Tesla, because of the company's history of successful manufacturing, and the ability to meet production deadlines, which has been a huge problem for Tesla.

The 300 mile range should put trip anxiety to rest, at least for those who can afford to buy the initial product.

Mercedes-Benz's already produces a couple of moderately priced electric vehicles. The B-Class EV and the two-seat Smart ForTwo ED, have achieved some market penetration. There have been reports saying Mercedes Benz will debut four new all-electric models by the end of the decade. Two will be sedans, including the high performance car designed to take a big piece of Tesla's market share in that segment, and the other two will be SUVs. All should have a single-charge range of at least 250 miles.
