General Motors has a new patented design for a two stage turbo charger and it could be big news for an auto industry that continues to work toward more powerful engines that use less fuel.
The patent was filed on May 19th of this year. It uses a unique bypass system that makes use of both the high pressure, and low pressure inlets, creating more power with almost no lag. Lag has always been a downside for turbo engines. It takes a moment for the turbo to spool up and then it delivers
mind blowing boost.
The new design improves performance, according to GM engineers during low speeds which is where turbo lag is most prominent.
The system is all governed by the Electronic Command Module ( computer ).
GM has not indicated when the system might make its debut, and there is also no word on which vehicles it might be used on first.
Check out the linked episode of the SST Car Show, which includes a review of the Chevy Sonic ( Turbo ), and you will see how a small turbo can make a huge difference in performance. The turbocharged sonic is faster than an old school V8 Muscle Car.
